SPACES WORLD
ARTIST BEGINS RESIDENCY
Czech artist Martin Papcún, part of
SPACES World Artist Program, began his eight-week
residency in Cleveland mid-October. Although originally
trained as a metal-smith and jeweler, Papcún has
abandoned his formal training and expression through
small objects and has moved into an experimentation of
space, light and shadow. During his residency in
Cleveland, Papcún will create a multi-media installation
using these elements while drawing from his interest in
places that have been lived in, visited, abandoned, or
those that can be defined as transient spaces. Papcún
intends to recreate an environment that makes the viewer
shift perceptions of reality, belief and illusion.
The artist joins SPACES for his first residency in the
United States. Papcun’s work has been shown extensively
in the Czech Republic. Recently, his work was exhibited
in Belgium, as well as at the Toledo Museum of Art.
The Ohio Arts Council's 11th annual
Dresden Residency Exchange brought two German
printmakers Tobias Stengel and Franziska Leonhardi to
Zygote Press in Cleveland. As part of the
exchange, two Ohio artists, Eliana Saari of Columbus and
Susan Vincent of Cleveland, went to Dresden, Germany
from September 8 to October 10, 2008. Susan
Vincent blogged about her experience in the exchange
program at http://suevince.wordpress.com
