NEWS
SPACES WORLD ARTIST BEGINS RESIDENCY

Czech artist Martin Papcún, part of SPACES World Artist Program, began his eight-week residency in Cleveland mid-October. Although originally trained as a metal-smith and jeweler, Papcún has abandoned his formal training and expression through small objects and has moved into an experimentation of space, light and shadow. During his residency in Cleveland, Papcún will create a multi-media installation using these elements while drawing from his interest in places that have been lived in, visited, abandoned, or those that can be defined as transient spaces. Papcún intends to recreate an environment that makes the viewer shift perceptions of reality, belief and illusion.  The artist joins SPACES for his first residency in the United States. Papcun’s work has been shown extensively in the Czech Republic. Recently, his work was exhibited in Belgium, as well as at the Toledo Museum of Art.

The Ohio Arts Council's 11th annual Dresden Residency Exchange brought two German printmakers Tobias Stengel and Franziska Leonhardi to Zygote Press in Cleveland.  As part of the exchange, two Ohio artists, Eliana Saari of Columbus and Susan Vincent of Cleveland, went to Dresden, Germany from September 8 to October 10, 2008.  Susan Vincent blogged about her experience in the exchange program at http://suevince.wordpress.com

ARTISTS SOUGHT FOR ARCADIA NATIONAL PARK RESIDENCY

Applications for the 2009 Artist-in-Residence program at Acadia National Park will be accepted until January 5, 2009.  The Artist-In-Residence program offers professional writers, composers and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their art form while surrounded by the inspiring landscape of the park. In the spring and fall, the park provides housing to participants for two-week to four-week periods. No additional stipend is available.

In return, participating artists are asked to donate to the park collection a piece of work representative of their style and their stay. These creative works will be displayed on a rotating schedule or shared with the public through other appropriate means during the upcoming seasons. Artists are also asked to participate in one public program per week of their residency such as demonstrations, talks, exploratory hikes or performances. TakepARTMailDogThe Ohio Arts Council recently received a very nice letter from the people at Cleveland Public Theatre.  We wanted to share that letter and thank all of you who support the arts!

To our friends at the OAC,

We at Cleveland Public Theatre just received our official letter about the second round of cuts. Though this is somewhat disappointing to us for our own programming, we were all struck at how difficult this must be for you all. And so we thought we would write a little note to tell you how we feel.

The OAC staff has consistently been nothing short of amazing. We always feel that you truly believe in the power of art and understand the world that it takes to make it. In short, you care and YOU GET IT. Your effort means a great deal to us at CPT and the support we receive is much greater than the sum of dollars alone.

We will definitely be contacting the various leaders that represent us (and some that are friends from other areas of the State), not to complain but just to remind them how important the OAC is to CPT and our larger community. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know.

Thank you all for your work!

Raymond and the staff at CPT
